The Wood Drying Process

Because a manufacturer has no control over the climate in which the furniture will be used, some companies in the worship furniture market have developed products to reduce this risk. These companies will use solid wood in conjunction with engineered materials like plywood, particle board, medium density fiberboard, and veneer to reduce the risk of the furniture warping or cracking. When considering a company, it will be important to for you to learn how they use solid wood and engineered materials. Certain parts of a pew should be made with solid wood, while other parts are best made with engineered materials to improve the long-term performance of the product.

At Sauder, we have worked very hard over our 70+ years to gain an understanding of wood and what it can and cannot do so that your pews will last a long time. We buy our lumber and dry it ourselves in our own pre-drier and kiln-drier. We are the only company in the worship furniture industry that owns a pre-drier and a kiln-drier. We choose to do this because it allows us to monitor the moisture content from the start, which reduces the risk of the wood warping and cracking. We are also the only company that has its own lumber optimization system, which assists us in using as much of the wood as possible when cutting out the knots and defects.
